Self-Hosted vs Managed Auth in 2026: Why are so many founders moving off Clerk and Auth0?
Over the past 6 months, I've seen an exodus of B2B SaaS startups transitioning off managed authentication providers like Auth0 and Clerk back to self-hosted or flat-fee zero-trust stacks like ArmorID or self-hosted Supabase Auth.
Is the primary motivation MAU cost savings once you hit 20k+ users, or is it latency and avoiding an external single point of failure in your middleware? What has been your architecture experience?

It's 100% both. When your edge middleware has to make a 90ms HTTPS roundtrip to a US-East auth cluster just to decode and verify a session on every client navigation, your Core Web Vitals take a beating. With ArmorID, verification happens in 0.4ms in edge RAM. Plus, paying $1,200/mo for auth alone on a $12k MRR SaaS is unsustainable unit economics.
We switched two weeks ago. The migration was completely seamless because ArmorID allows fallback validation during password hash transitions. Our edge TTFB dropped by 70ms worldwide.
Also don't overlook compliance. If you sell to European financial or health enterprise clients, having user PII stored in your own VPC database instead of a 3rd party multi-tenant cloud is an instant SOC2 & GDPR green checkmark.
